A production meant as a stop gap for a lack of films around the start of 2025, which ended up being in itself also a block. Funny how that works.
I originally "started" this production back in January 2025, and by that I mean, after the release of Caught a Bunny, I was a bit stumped on ideas. That led to a few months where I was trying to figure out what to make, and couldn't come up with anything, so I resorted to just either work on commissions and (for the past 2 months) try doing something else that wasn't the many things I constantly work on.
With this block, the idea for Art Block Again began on April 6th, 2025, as a screenplay. This is the very first film I've done where I actually did pre-production! Every previous one before Gym Perks was effectively done improv. Most of the script actually ended up staying, but one thing that changed were the poses somewhat.
This was also one of those projects that were a bit messy to organize... However, having most scenes modular like this did led to way cleaner workflows and less screwups than usual.
This project could've actually released faster, probably all the way back in June, but I wasn't feeling the best mood-wise to be working on stuff, so I had this quiet hiatus from June-July where I didn't really update much. However, when I went back to it, I couldn't really figure out how to make it special. That's until I pulled up my music collection again.
I have a massive collection of Barber Beats music, which is a genre of music where people take songs, and straight up just slows them down. However, the special detail here is in the presentation. Almost every single release you see of this genre has gourgeous album covers, incredible selection, sometimes there's even actual mixing done to make it flow better.
Some people I would suggest of the space include:
I have this album of Mabisyo called "This Isn't Hentai Jazz", which was a direct response to their audience exclaiming when a new type of album just like "Hentai Jazz" would come out in the future, and their response was: no.
Hentai Jazz and its Deluxe edition are albums that were part of my jazz-loving era and became a personal trademark, both in sound and cover art. Constantly even when I'm live on YouTube (because yes, I do go live) people ask me, "When will you release Hentai Jazz 2?" or "Are you planning to make Hentai Jazz 2?".
My answer is always the same: a resounding no.
For several reasons, I can't make another album like Hentai Jazz. That's why I decided to create an album that explicitly screams that it is not Hentai Jazz. The result of that idea is this album: a return to that familiar sound, while reflecting on the different stages that shaped my jazz era.
I'll be honest, I should've paid attention to what the youtube description of the album release said, because they explicitly said they didn't want credit for the mixes. They even took the handle link out of the Twitter post, which I do not blame them for doing.
Tangent aside, The songs in this album just filled me with ideas, that I wanted to make something with it, but then I realized that I could integrate it into the animation. Thus, I did a custom cut of the track "Tell Me More Lies", as the original was way too long for what I needed.
This was the missing piece that inspired to finish this production.
